Finding Calm on the Go

Business travel often means long days, packed schedules, and high pressure. In the middle of it all, stress can creep in quickly. That’s why today, as part of Business Travel Wellbeing Week, we’re focusing on mindfulness – and sharing a simple five-minute grounding exercise you can use wherever your journey takes you.

Why mindfulness matters

Travelling disrupts routines. Sleep patterns shift, healthy meals can be harder to find, and the demands of meetings or events don’t ease up just because you’re away from home. Mindfulness helps to restore balance by bringing your attention to the present moment, calming racing thoughts and easing stress.

A simple 5-minute grounding exercise

This exercise can be done in an airport lounge, a hotel room, or even while waiting for a taxi:

1. Pause and breathe

  • Inhale through your nose for 4 counts.
  • Hold gently for 2 counts.
  • Exhale through your mouth for 6 counts.
  • Repeat three times.

2. Notice your senses (5–4–3–2–1)

  • 5 things you can see.
  • 4 things you can feel.
  • 3 things you can hear.
  • 2 things you can smell.
  • 1 thing you can taste.

3. Reset

  • Take one final deep breath.
  • Open your eyes and continue with renewed focus.

Small moments of mindfulness can make a big impact on how you feel during business travel. Next time you’re away, give this grounding exercise a try.
