Staying Active on the Move

When travelling for business, your schedule can be packed with early flights, long meetings, and late nights catching up on emails. With all that sitting, it’s easy for your body to feel stiff and sluggish. But even a few minutes of movement can make a big difference.

At Principal Business Travel, we believe that looking after your physical wellbeing on the move is just as important as the business you’re travelling for. Staying active helps you:

  • Boost energy levels.
  • Improve focus and productivity.
  • Reduce aches, pains, and stiffness from travel.
  • Arrive at your meetings feeling sharper and more confident.

The good news? You don’t need a gym or special equipment – your hotel room is the perfect place to stretch, reset, and recharge.

3 Quick Hotel Room Stretches

1. The Suitcase Shoulder Roll
Carrying luggage and sitting hunched on planes or trains can leave your shoulders tight and sore.

  • Stand tall, feet shoulder-width apart.
  • Slowly roll your shoulders backwards in a circular motion 10 times.
  • Repeat forwards 10 times.
This simple movement opens up your posture and relieves tension from long travel days.

2. The Desk Chair Twist
Sitting for long periods puts pressure on the lower back. A gentle twist can release stiffness.

  • Sit upright in a chair (or stand tall).
  • Place your right hand on the back of the chair.
  • Twist your torso gently to the right, keeping your hips facing forward.
  • Hold for 20 seconds, then repeat on the left side.
This stretch improves spinal mobility and helps reset your posture.

3. The Wall Calf Stretch
Hours of sitting can leave your calves tight, especially after a flight.

  • Stand facing a wall, place both hands flat against it.
  • Step one foot back, pressing the heel into the ground.
  • Keep your back leg straight and bend your front knee.
  • Hold for 30 seconds, then switch sides.
This stretch improves circulation and helps prevent stiffness from travel.

Make Movement Part of Your Travel Routine

These three stretches take less than five minutes but can have a lasting impact on how you feel during a busy work trip. Add them into your morning routine, before heading to a meeting, or after a long flight.
